Tofuko Studio はじめに

A small studio in Tokyo making articles, podcast episodes and drawings about building a life you can actually keep up with.

Tofuko waving hello

Tofuko Studio exists for a simple reason: most advice about self-improvement is written for a version of you who is already doing well. It assumes energy you may not have, a week that goes to plan, and a life without the friction of moving countries, learning a language, or lying awake at three in the morning.

This is an attempt at the other thing. Everything published here is written for ordinary weeks — the ones with a bad night’s sleep in them, the ones where the plan falls apart on Tuesday.

What gets published here

Articles 記事

Long enough to say something real, short enough to read in a sitting. On habits, anxiety, language learning and life in Japan.

Podcast 聴く

Slower conversations on the same subjects, for walks and commutes and washing up. Roughly every other week.

Illustrations 絵

Every piece gets a drawing made for it. Not decoration — a second way of saying the thing.

Who it is for

Anyone who likes learning. There is no assumed level and no prerequisite reading. Some pieces are about Japan specifically, because that is where this is written from, but most are about things that travel: how habits actually form, why rest is so hard to permit yourself, what to do when a language refuses to stick.

If you are in the middle of a transition — a new country, a new field, a new attempt at an old habit — you are exactly the reader this is for.

What you will not find

No hustle, no optimisation for its own sake, and no pretending that a five-step framework will fix a hard year. Nothing here is a substitute for medical or psychological care, and where a subject calls for a professional, the articles say so plainly.

Tofuko — life is more.

The tagline is deliberately open. Not life is better, which would promise something no website can deliver. More: more noticed, more considered, more yours than it was.

Meet Tofuko 豆腐子

Tofuko is a block of tofu with a sprout on its head, a striped beak, and small determined feet.

Tofu seemed right as a character. It is plain, inexpensive, and quietly everywhere — and it takes on the flavour of whatever it is put with, which is a decent description of what learning feels like when it is going well. The sprout is the part that keeps growing whether or not anyone is watching. The beak was an accident that stayed.
